SMS Sender Registration

Register, manage, and configure sender IDs to ensure successful and compliant SMS delivery

Overview

SMS sender registration is an essential step in setting up SMS communication through the CDP. Whether you're sending one-time ticket reminders, promotional offers, or automated campaign flows, having a verified and recognizable sender ID ensures delivery, compliance, and supporter trust.

The CDP supports both numeric and alphanumeric sender IDs. You can register multiple senders within your account and assign different sender profiles to different use cases—such as separating transactional messaging from marketing or using different IDs for different departments or regions.

Sender Types

1. Alphanumeric Senders

  • Alphanumeric sender IDs are custom names made up of letters and numbers (e.g. YourClubFC).

  • These are often used for branding purposes, as the sender name appears clearly to the supporter.

  • Note: Alphanumeric senders cannot receive replies—they are one-way only.

  • Note: Alphanumeric senders can be maximum 11 character long

Alphanumeric senders can be registered directly in the CDP under Admin / SMS Sendout.

2. Numeric Senders (Virtual Numbers)

  • Numeric sender IDs use standard phone numbers (e.g. +46701234567).

  • These allow for two-way SMS, meaning supporters can reply to your messages and those can be accessed in the CDP.

  • Ideal for interactive campaigns, customer support, or opt-out flows.

If you do not have a numeric sender already, Data Talks can assist you in purchasing and registering virtual numbers, tailored to the country and use case you're targeting. When configuring a Numeric Sender, you need to get in contact with your Customer Success Manager.

Managing Multiple Senders

You can register and manage multiple senders within your CDP account. This enables you to:

  • Separate marketing from service communications

  • Use language- or region-specific sender IDs

  • Customize the experience per audience segment

When sending SMS messages from the campaign builder, you'll be able to select the appropriate sender for each message or flow.

Sender Registration Process

  1. Decide on sender type(s):

    • Alphanumeric for branding

    • Numeric for two-way communication

  2. Register Sender in CDP and/or Contact your Customer Success Manager:

    • For registering alphanumeric senders, submit the maximum 11 character sender on the SMS Sendout Admin page.

    • For numeric senders, Data Talks will guide you through the purchase and provisioning of a virtual number.

  3. Provisioning & Compliance:

    • In some countries, sender registration requires regulatory approval which may take up to 2-3 weeks (e.g.: US, Australia).

    • Data Talks will handle this process and may require additional business information to submit the registration form. Your Customer Success Manager will notify you when the sender is approved.

  4. Assign Senders in Campaign Builder:

    • Once registered, your sender IDs will appear in the dropdown menu inside the SMS message builder.

Best Practices

  • Use clear sender names for transparency and trust.

  • Reserve numeric senders for cases where replies are expected or necessary.

  • Clearly distinguish marketing from transactional messages by using different sender IDs.

  • Always comply with local SMS regulations and opt-out requirements.
